Monkey 47 Dry Gin - 50cl - 47% ABV
Created by Alexander Stein in 2006, Monkey 47 Gin is a cult favourite and undoubtedly one of the first 'doing it my way' gins to crack the international scene. Made in the Black Forest in Germany, the gin is a 47-botanical strong flavour explosion that was released to great acclaim. At the time it's cranberry core was considered an utterly strange diversion, but given the strange path that gin has taken in the decade or so since its release, it could now be considered the leader of a very strong pack.
To taste, it's a wild ride, with bright, zingy citrus taking an assertive lead that gives way to a rich world of flavours, from a herbal juniper, to a crisp juicy lingonberry, to sweet liquorice, floral, perfumed cardamom and soft petal like touches. It's an incredible adventure, but it's one that certainly changes in the bottle. The longer you keep it, the more a lime cordial flavour emerges. It's really worth having more than bottle around for the sake of comparison and enjoyment.
To Serve: Use straight up Indian Tonic and either a sprig of lavender to bring out the floral qualities, or a handful of cranberries to highlight that sour, juicy heart.
