Fentimans Tonic - 12.5cl
Though the Fentimans tonic range is a thoroughly modern affair these days, with flavours designed to take in the wide scope of Gins on offer and carbonation fizzed up to just the right point to ensure a perfect sip, every sip, there’s something so quaint about the backstory that it feels like one worth telling…
In 1905, iron puddler Thomas Fentiman was approached by a fellow tradesman for a loan. As security, he took the man’s recipes for a botanically brewed ginger beer. The loan was never repaid, so Thomas became the owner of this unique recipe. His career took something of a deviation, and he ended up peddling the ginger beer, delivering it door to door and using a horse and cart as transport.
The modern iteration is a big, bold mix. There’s tonic, of course, as well as a few twists on other soft drinks, and there’s also the Connoisseurs Range, designed with a view to make the very most of Gin – to shine a spotlight on the botanicals by providing just the right amount of support.
With milled quinine bark and lemongrass sitting alongside an organic grain base, this is a tonic that tastes homemade, and we mean that in a good way. You can taste all of its elements and all of the work that went into it. It’s just so much more characterful than many of the bog-standard supermarket fare, with a beautiful sharpness and just the right amount of sugar and a tonic we’d recommend for gins that need a confident dance partner (such as Greenall’s).
